Light the 9th candle.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” John 1:5 NRSV
Have you ever wondered why movies and books like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, draw a crowd and a large readership? The scripture reading for today really sums up the circumstance of humanity. Throughout history, time, our lives … there is a period of great darkness and the one thing we really want to know is will the darkness overcome us? These movies and books show us the hope that is stated in this verse… darkness did not overcome the light.
This is a statement I believe we all want to hold as true and so we love to see the light saber extinguish the dark force, the dark lord defeated by courageous youth who summon light from their wands, and little hobbits trudge up Mount Doom with light as their weapon against the evil that tries to stop them.
The good news for today – these stories are not a fairy tale for they convey the truth! Darkness does not overcome the light! That is what we remember in Advent. The light, in the form of a tiny child, overcomes the darkest corners of our lives and in the widest spectrum of our world.
Light always wins.
Activity for Families and kids – Materials needed: flashlight and blankets.
Turn a flashlight on then start covering it up with blankets. Watch to see if you can still see the light. Even if the light is covered, is it gone? Look under the blankets. The light that Jesus brings can never be put out, no matter how dark it gets his light still shines.
