Welcome to Dexter United Methodist Church!

December 19 – Tuesday

Light the 17th candle

Scripture reading:

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.  If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.  If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”  1 John 1:5-9 NIV

How do we receive the light this Advent and walk in its way?  In one simple and yet very hard way – confess.  Many churches have dropped a public liturgical reading of confession and yet confession is still good for the soul – even the darkest soul.  We see this played out in Star Wars when Darth Vader confesses to Luke – “I am your father” – this is the beginning of the light returning in him.  Check the light o’ meter in your life today.  If you need to confess, now is a great time to ask God for forgiveness and walk in the light that Jesus brings this season.

Activity for Families and kids – material needed: paper and writing tool and candle in jar or fireplace.

Take some time to write what you need to confess, say you are sorry for, to God.  Then after you write or draw that put the paper in the fire and watch the light grow and your sins removed.
