Scripture reading:

John 3:17-21New Living Translation (NLT)

17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. 19 And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. 20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21 But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.[a]

Advent is a time to examine what we love.  We think we know what we love — God, our family, friends.  But take time to look at how your time and money is spent.  How about your thoughts, what do you spend your time thinking about?  Where do you put your energy?  This will show you what you love.  This scripture today reminds us how easy it is to love darkness more than light.  Advent is a great time to reorient our hearts to the light by spending time with Jesus and creating habits to continue spending this time with him long after Advent is over.

Activity for Families and kids – material needed: dress up clothes (optional)

Act out a story that you love about Jesus.  Spending time with Jesus and his stories is a great way to come close to the light.
