Light the 5th candle today.
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.” Isaiah 9:2 NIV
Have you ever woken up to complete and utter darkness? It is very strange and eerie. Just such a day happen to me this September on a Wednesday morning. I really don’t like getting up early, but on this particular day our son had Bible study at 6:30 in the morning so I woke early to make sure his lunch was finished and he was up. I knew something was wrong when I woke, but it took a few moments for it to register. It was dark – much darker than normal. No night lights in the hall shown to help me make my way upstairs. The electricity was out everywhere in my neighborhood. No street lights, or house lights – nothing. I felt my way around to get my cell phone – from the light of it I lit some candles. When the electricity returned it was so obvious for the all the light outside and the neighborhood began to glow again.
This feeling of relief when the lights and glow returned is what I think of when I read this text in Isaiah. This was a promise to God’s people about what he would do for them through a coming messiah. It is still God’s promise to us that light will dawn on us that darkness will flee in the presence of Christ.
Activity for families and kids – Materials needed: your memory.
Tell stories about times when it was dark and then the light came on and how you felt about the light. Remind them that when they see the light to remember Jesus.
