Light the 6th candle.
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” Ephesians 5:8
What stands out to me in this verse is the use of the word darkness and light. It is not used to describe the area in which a person dwells but rather the person themselves. Therefore the reader is not described as being in the dark but darkness itself. The same is true of the light. The reader who is in the Lord is not in the light but light itself.
It seems to me that when God acts in the world to create or recreate, God brings light that changes darkness into light – in the creation of the world, in the salvation plan of Jesus’ birth and in every person who accepts Jesus as Lord. To be a Christian is the call to live as children of light – to give the same light of Christ to others so they are not darkness but can also have access to light and life.
What darkness needs light that you can give today?
Activity for Families and kids – Materials needed: Imagination.
Talk about ways you can bring light – be the light to other people. Then choose someone to bring light to this week and plan when and how you will do it.
